"The catalyst for economic development in Houston"

Can't Keep Us Down!

Ike can't keep us down! Hurricane Ike has postponed classes that were scheduled for September and October. We are working hard with The Houston Area Women's Center, The Bridge Over Troubled Waters, and Katy Christian Ministries to reschedule the classes and will notify the volunteers as we set the new dates. If you were unable to participate for the original classes, please let UBI know if you are available for the end of October and November. Additionly, if you are now unable to teach due to the change in date, please call the office (877-824-8770) or send an email to info@urbanbusiness.org. Thanks for you patience as we work through the recovery.

Empowering Women

DAYA On August 23rd, Rozanne Barone presented a compelling message at the Journey to Empowerment seminar at U of H. The seminar which attracted over 200 participants was sponsored by DAYA. A successful consultant who has coached many small businesses, she focused on one area that many small business owners do not adequately address, planning. The response was overwhelmingly postive, with participants asking many questions afterwards, and volunteering to help us in future seminars. Thanks to DAYA for the opportunity to be a part of this wonderful experience.

"Creating a Craving"

(c) 2007 Jane Buchanan An energetic group of residents at the Houston Area Women's Center was on hand Tuesday, September 9 to learn about "Creating and Causing a Craving". Each of the women came with a dream in their mind, and left with a better understanding of how their ideas could fulfill a void in the marketplace. After the class ended, Phil Black fielded many specific questions related to start-ups. UBI volunteers are currently providing specific assistance with a medical supply company and an independant book-publishing endeavor. UBI provides an ongoing series of classes at the facility that assists women as part of their temporary stay at the shelter.

"Keep Pushing"

Rafaela's salon Rafaela is a small business owner who operates a salon in the Spring Branch area. She came in contact with UBI through our Basic Business Seminar Series at La Rosa, hungry for new marketing ideas. Her story of hard work, dedication, and the results she has achieved is an inspiration. You can read her compelling story here.

Wanted : Assistance for one of our partners

La Rosa Family Services

Although we normally provide information  on ways to volunteer and donate to Urban Business Initiative, the board of directors has decided to preempt our request for assistance in favor of highlighting the need of one of our close partners in the community. La Rosa Family Services is the only domestic violence organization that focuses on Hispanic families in Houston's north side. They host extensive support groups and individual counseling to men, women and families in Spanish. UBI works with La Rosa to provide business seminar classes in Spanish and English. Rafaela (mentioned in the previous article) is an excellent example of the people that will not be helped if La Rosa is forced to cut programs and possibly close on October 31, 2008. Help keep La Rosa open by purchasing a plate of BBQ, bowling in a benefit or making a donation.
