Our History
In 1998 a group of young professionals became dissatisfied with the blighted areas surrounding the Houston business district. They had a vision of simulating the local economy by helping neighborhood entrepreneurs form businesses that would employ local resources.
The founders began developing a unique business program that taught those discouraged by the blight around them to take the challenge of helping themselves financially and impacting the entire image of the neighborhood.
An encounter with a woman seeking assistance with her struggling business led to the refocusing of UBI’s mission to include survivors of domestic violence and refugees.
Mission
UBI’s mission is to empower survivors of domestic violence and refugees through business education and mentoring to achieve financial and personal independence, in support of breaking the cycle of violence.
